Sisterly Visits

One of the best things about this summer was that I got to see both of my sisters, even if it wasn't at the same time!

Sr. Rejoice made it home at the end of July (she flew in from Italy earlier in the month, but I was too sick to travel), and we all went up to see her.
We had a great, but too short visit!

Fortunately, we're all on What's App, so we can text even when she's in Italy or Ghana.

She's setting up her convents in Ghana and finishing up her doctorate in Rome, so it was wonderful to hear all the news about how everything is going!
And then Sr. MaryAnn made it back in early August.  She flew in to our local airport, and then I drove her up to see our folks.

Curiously, she and Sr.Rejoice went to the Assembly (the big annual meeting of their order) in the Middle of July, so they got a chance to hang out together as well!
After my and Mumpy's experience with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, we were all a little paranoid about ticks!

This is Sr. MaryAnn standing on the pavement near the field of sunflowers, but far away from any possible ticks!

She also spent some time with us back in Maryland, more on that in another post!

Natural History

Last week's Adventurers was again Natural History.  We did the mammal hall, human origins, and the ocean hall.

What's not to like about glowing jars of weird stuff in a dimly lit corner?

And here is Choclo doing his best penguin impression!

And here is everyone's second favorite giant squid (the really big one is in a very long horizontal case).

But the real surprise was the birds!  I've been to this museum probably a dozen times in the last 5 years, but I hadn't seen the birds.

Oob loves birds, and was disappointed in the lack of feathers in Mammal Hall, so I told him we would find the birds. I had a vague idea they were on the bottom floor.

We discovered two things.

One, the birds are tucked away in two dead end hallways in the basement.

Two, they are not "birds of the world" the way Mammal Hall is "mammals of the world."

They were something much better!  They were samples of every single bird found in this area in the last 150 years!

As a novice bird watcher, it was fantastic!  I have a fancy searchable bird app with pictures and songs, but there is truly nothing like seeing all the sparrows in the area next to each other, holding still.  Seeing them together, it's quite obvious that the song sparrow is the one with the gray cap and the house sparrow has just a gray stripe.

There were glass cases for song birds, another for owls, another for ducks, for eagles and vultures, for heron like birds... all with tags explaining where and when they might be seen.  It was a beginning birders paradise!

Guess What Choclo Likes

When I asked him which pictures he wanted in his room, a certain theme developed.

It's The Great Wall of Penguins!

He was interested in a few of the other pictures I showed him, "But, " he confided, "I mostly like penguins."

We can do that!

Oob is more interested in the trucks.

I have this dream that having just a few favorite toys on low shelves will make it easier to teach the younger boys to clean up after themselves. We should all have a dream.

The piece de resistance, however, has to be this cheerful fellow.

We were actually looking for a new humidifier for the older boys' room (last week's cold has lingered into this week's nasty cough), but when we saw him, Mxyl and Zorg agreed that they should have their old humidifier so Choclo could have a penguin.

That's brotherly love!
