The Big Trip! Hawaii!

Aloha!  We came into a giant pile of imaginary money a while back, and we are using it to take an imaginary trip around the world. Keep in mind, our experiences are imaginary... which means you can come along, too!

We are starting with a visit to our friend and long time blog reader Annabelle, who happens to be living in Hawaii just now!

We arrived about 3 pm local time after a 14 hour trip, and have had time to see the blooming plumeria trees and a quick dip at the beach.  Hawaii really is amazingly beautiful!

In the morning, Annabelle is taking us whale watching!  It's the very end of the whale watching season, but I hope we see some!

We brought Annabelle and her family a pretty scarf, some shark tooth fossils, and a tin of Old Bay (a seafood spice from Maryland).

 Thanks, Annabelle!

What else should we do in Hawaii?

Total so far: Plane tickets: $4500, Other expenses $450.

How about the Dole Pineapple Plantation? (Or at least try the Dole Pineapple Ice Cream!)

Not the same, but a reasonable facsimilie: http://therecipecritic.com/2013/09/dole-pineapple-whips/

And snorkeling in Hanauma Bay

And one more: Polynesian Cultural Center. It's absolutely for tourists, but with fun games and activities (sometimes cooking) for each island culture. You'll have fun, learn a bit (maybe even how to start a fire with a stick and a string), and then you can feast at the luau show. http://www.polynesia.com/day-experience.html#native

Bon Voyage!

Aloha! So glad to see you! We have your welcome leis here on the kitchen table! My 8 year old Ben says to take a hike up Makapu'u point, go fishing in the tiny tidal pools (for tiny fish!). Eat some shave ice (basically a snow cone made by "shaving" a big ice cube, some fresh fish tacos and maybe try the local favorites a "loco moco' and 'spam musubi" :) Learn about the Hawaiian alphabet..pretty easy, only 12 letters and fun to try to pronounce! Maybe we'll send more later. Have fun!

Oh yes, some more! Learn about Captain Cook who discovered the islands for the west. They thought he was a god when his boat came in. He also died here in a skirmish with the natives. Learn about the real 'beach boys' and Duke Kahanamoku whose statue stands on the beach in Waikiki. Visit the 'windward' side of the islands vs. the 'leeward' side (the windward side gets tons more rain than the leeward as the clouds catch on the mountains). Look up the story of Eddie Aikau. He lives on in a famous saying "Eddie would go". You see bumper stickers here with the saying. While snorkeling look for the state fish "Humuhumunukunukuapua`a". Got that? pronounce it! "who moo who moo new coo new coo ah poo ah ah" It is a really neat looking fish! You should have a good time here!

oh, maybe you should take in a luau? My family is visiting from Ohio in June and we are hopping over to Maui and going to this one

Go see what the menu is and make a virgin mai tai for dinner! Probably can't get poi there but a purple pudding would do.

If you are a Hawaii resident you get a "kama'aina" discount for just about anything with prices that are high for tourists. :) Sometimes as much as 20% off. You can look up what "kama'aina" means in Hawaiian. Some other words to look up that are commonly used: aloha, mahalo, keiki, pono and aina. Aloha for now!

Wendy,

I love imaginary trips. They are inexpensive and less tiring and you can go ANYWHERE and your luggage never gets lost. The real thing would be good too! We're looking forward to seeing you when you come down our way. Have a safe trip!

Oh, yes! We're traveling with our imaginary interdimensional luggage. It's wonderful, only the size and weight of your wallet, but you can fit most of your house inside.

I'm also imagining that none of the 8 of us have any problems with jet lag.

I DO have the most prodigious imagination!!! :D
